Chapter 8: Maintaining Physical Devices ● 89 Initializing Disk Drives You can use Adaptec Storage Manager to initialize any disk drives that are in a Ready state, if required. You may want to do this to erase all existing data and metadata (including all logical drive information) before using the disk drive in a new logical device or as a hot spare. ! Caution: Do not initialize a disk drive that is part of a logical drive. Initializing a disk drive that's part of a logical drive may make the logical drive unusable. Back up all data from your disk drive before you initialize it. To initialize a single disk drive: 1 In the Physical Devices view, click the disk drive you want to initialize. 2 In the menu bar, select Actions, then click Initialize. 3 Click Yes to initialize the disk drive. The initialization begins. To initialize all ready disk drives on a controller: 1 In the Enterprise View, click the controller whose disk drives you want to initialize. 2 In the menu bar, select Actions, then click Initialize all ready drives. 3 Click Yes to initialize the disk drives. The initialization begins. Clearing Disk Drives You can use Adaptec Storage Manager to erase all existing data on any disk drives that are in the Ready state, if required. You can clear the drive, or clear the drive securely to completely destroy any data on the disk. Secure erase amounts to electronic "data shredding." To clear a disk drive: 1 In the Physical Devices view, click the disk drive you want to clear. 2 In the menu bar, select Actions, then click Clear. 3 Click Yes to clear the disk drive. To securely erase a disk drive: 1 In the Physical Devices view, click the disk drive you want to clear. 2 In the menu bar, select Actions, then click Secure erase. 3 Click Yes to securely erase the disk drive.

Initializing Disk Drives
You can use Adaptec Storage Manager to initialize any disk drives that are in a Ready state, if
required. You may want to do this to erase all existing data and metadata (including all logical

Caution:
Do not initialize a disk drive that is part of a logical drive. Initializing a disk drive
