Appendix B: Selecting the Best RAID Level ● 153 Comparing RAID Levels Use this table to select the RAID levels that are most appropriate for the logical drives on your storage space, based on the number of available disk drives and your requirements for performance and reliability. RAID Level RAID 0 RAID 1 RAID 1E RAID 10 RAID 5 RAID 5EE RAID 50 RAID 6 RAID 60 Spanned Volume RAID Volume Redundancy No Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes No No Disk Drive Usage 100% 50% 50% 50% 67% - 94% 50% - 88% 67% - 94% 50% - 88% 50% - 88% 100% 50% - 100% Read Performance Write Performance Built-in Hot Spare No No No No No Yes No No No No No Minimum Disk Drives 2 2 3 4 3 4 6 4 8 2 4 Disk drive usage, read performance, and write performance depend on the number of drives in the logical drive. In general, the more drives, the better the performance. More information about each RAID level is available beginning on page 154. Understanding Drive Segments A drive segment is a disk drive or portion of a disk drive that is used to create a logical drive. A disk drive can include both RAID segments (segments that are part of a logical drive) and available segments. Each segment can be part of only one logical drive at a time. If a disk drive is not part of any logical drive, the entire disk is an available segment.
