E Stopping the motorcycle Reduce speed, shift down and release the throttle twistgrip. Shift down to engage first gear and then neutral. Apply the brakes and bring the motorcycle to a complete stop. To switch the engine off, simply turn the key to OFF (page 52). Using padlocks or other locks designed to prevent motorcycle motion, such as brake disc locks, rear sprocket locks, and so on is dangerous and may impair motorcycle operation and affect the safety of rider and passenger. Warning Parking Stop the motorcycle, then put it on the side stand (see page 62). To prevent theft, turn the handlebar fully left and turn the ignition key to the LOCK position. If you park in a garage or other indoor area, make sure that there is proper ventilation and that the motorcycle is not near a source of heat. You may leave the parking lights on by turning the key to position P. Do not leave the key turned to P for long periods or the battery will run down. Never leave the motorcycle unattended with the ignition key inserted. Important The exhaust system may still be hot even after engine is switched off; take special care not to touch the exhaust system with any part of your body and do not park the motorcycle next to inflammable material (wood, leaves, etc.).
