OPERATION Starting the Engine Starting a Cold Engine 4. Turn the ignition key past the ON position to engage the starter. Activate the starter for a maximum of five seconds, releasing the key when the engine starts. If the engine does not start, release the key and wait five seconds. Then activate the starter for another five seconds. Repeat this procedure until the engine starts. 5. If the engine slows or stops, position the choke knob half way in to allow proper engine warm up. 6. Vary the engine RPM slightly with the throttle to aid in warm-up. When the engine idles smoothly, push the choke all the way in. Starting a Warm Engine Warm engines do not normally require the use of the choke. Excessive use of the choke can cause the spark plug to become wet fouled. 1. Position the vehicle on a level surface with the transmission in neutral. 2. Lock the parking brake, turn the fuel tank valve to ON, sit on the vehicle, and turn the engine stop switch to RUN. 3. If the engine has cooled to a point where it does not readily start, intermittent use of the choke button (pulled half way out) may be necessary. 4. If the engine is over-choked when warm, depress the throttle lever fully while cranking to aid in starting. 5. Release the throttle lever immediately after the engine starts. If the engine does not start and all conditions are favorable, change the spark plug and try again. 46
