Leaving Your Vehicle With the Engine Running Torque Lock If you are parking on a hilland you don't shift your transaxle intoPARK (P) properly, the weight of the vehicle may put too much force on the parking pawl in the transaxle.You may find it difficult to pullthe shift lever outof PARK (P). Thisis called "torquelock." To prevent torque lock, the parking brake and then shift set into PARK (P) properly before you leave the driver's seat. To find outhow, see "Shifting Into PARK (P)" in the Index. When you are ready to drive,move the shift lever outof PARK (P) before you release the parking brake. If "torque lock" does occur, you may need to have another vehiclepush yours a littleuphill to take some of the pressure from the transaxle, you can pull the shift so lever outof PARK (P). If you have to leaveyour vehicle with the engine running, be sureyour vehicle isin PARK (P) and your parking brake is firmly set beforeyou leave it. After you've moved the shift lever into PARK (P) the position, hold the regular brake pedal down. Then, see if you can move the shift lever away from PARK (P) without first pulling it toward you. If you can, itmeans that the shift leverwasn't fully locked intoPARK (P). 2-35
