Map Viewing Products This section describes how your Web browser works with Autodesk MapGuide Viewer to display maps. Web Browser A Web browser is a client application that reads hypertext data in the form of HTML pages containing text, graphic, and programmatic content. Web pages are usually posted on the Internet, an intranet, or an extranet. An intranet uses Internet technology, but is used internally by a company or other organization; information on an intranet is not available to outside users. An extranet extends an intranet to outside users who have been given access rights, such as customers who access a site with a password. In addition to reading and displaying Web pages, a Web browser can also perform file transfers using file transfer protocol (FTP) and run helper programs, such as Autodesk MapGuide Viewer. Autodesk MapGuide Viewer Autodesk MapGuide Viewer displays a map in your Web browser when you open a Web page that contains an embedded MWF or when you click a link to an MWF. Autodesk MapGuide Viewer is available in three versions: A Plug-In for use with Netscape® Navigator on Windows systems An ActiveX Control for use with Microsoft® Internet Explorer on Windows systems A Java™ Edition for use with Netscape Navigator on Sun™ Solaris systems and with Microsoft Internet Explorer on Apple® Macintosh® systems. It can also be used on Windows, but we recommend that you use the PlugIn or ActiveX Control instead. All are available for download free of charge from the Autodesk MapGuide Web site: http://www.autodesk.com/mapguide. Note If you want to distribute maps without requiring that users install one of the Viewers, you can do so using Autodesk MapGuide LiteView.
