format To prepare a new disk (or an old one you want to reuse) so that it can store information. Low-level formatting divides a disk into tracks and sectors and creates addressable locations on it. Logical formatting prepares a disk for use with your particular operating system. Graphics Lines, angles, curves, and other nonalphanumeric data. Hexadecimal A numbering system with a base of 16, frequently used by programmers. Any decimal number between 0 and 255 can be expressed by a two-digit hexadecimal number. High-density A type of format that allows you to store more data than on single- or double-density diskettes. A 5.25-inch high-density diskette can store 1.2MB of data. A 3.5-inch high-density diskette can store 1.44MB of data. Input/output (l/O) port See Port. Interface A physical or software connection used to transmit data between equipment or programs.
