03 Your driving environment Wipers and washers CAUTION The rain sensor should be deactivated when washing the car in an automatic car wash, etc. If the rain sensor function is left on, the wipers will start inadvertently in the car wash and could be damaged. High-pressure headlight washing* High-pressure headlight washing consumes a large quantity of washer fluid. To save fluid, the headlights are washed using two alternatives: IR-reflecting windshield* • Low/high beam headlights on. The headlights will be washed the first time the windshield is washed. Thereafter, the headlights will only be washed once for every five times the windshield is washed within a 10-minute period. 03 Windshield washing • Parking lights on. Optional Active Bending Lights will be washed once for every five times the windshield is washed. Normal halogen headlights will not be washed. Section of the windshield where the IR-coating is not applied CAUTION Use ample washer fluid when washing the windshield. The windshield should be thoroughly wet when the wipers are in operation. Washing function An optional factory-installed infrared (IR) coating can be applied to the windshield to help protect the cabin from the sun's heat and the fading effect of sunlight on upholstery, panels, etc. Electronic equipment such as garage door openers, electronic toll tags and similar devices should not be placed on sections of the windshield with the IR coating because this could affect their function and limit their range. For best performance, place the device on the section of the windshield without the IR coating (see the area marked in the illustration). Move the lever toward the steering wheel to start the windshield and headlight washers. After the lever is released the wipers make several extra sweeps. NOTE One headlight is washed at a time. Heated washer nozzles* The washer nozzles are heated automatically in cold weather to help prevent the washer fluid from freezing. * Option/accessory, for more information, see Introduction. 97
