20 Inspection and Maintenance 20.2 Inspecting and Maintaining the Trimmer / Brushcutter WARNING To reduce the risk of personal injury from unintended activation, shut off the engine before inspecting the trimmer / brushcutter or carrying out any maintenance, @ 6. Carry out only the maintenance operations described in this manual. There are no user-authorized repairs. STIHL recommends that repair work be performed by authorized STIHL servicing dealers. To properly maintain the trimmer / brushcutter: ► Replace a worn deflector, mowing head or metal cutting attachment. ► Periodically sharpen a metal cutting attachment. ► Inspect and clean the spark arresting screen according to the maintenance chart. ► Inspect the spacer of the trimmer / brushcutter and replace if damaged. ► Inspect the air filter of the trimmer / brushcutter and replace if damaged. ► Have worn, missing or damaged safety labels replaced by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. If you make a warranty claim for a component that has not been serviced or maintained properly, coverage may be denied. 20.3 Sharpening and Balancing a Metal Cutting Attachment WARNING Never use a dull or damaged metal cutting attachment. Working with a dull blade leads to increased physical strain, increased vibration load, unsatisfactory cutting results and increased wear, which can result in loss of control and injury to the operator or bystanders. A damaged cutting attachment may vibrate, crack, break or come off the English trimmer / brushcutter, which may result in serious or fatal injury or property damage. Make sure the cutting attachment is sharp and in good condition before starting work. WARNING An improperly sharpened metal cutting attachment can increase the risk of kickout (blade thrust) and other reactive forces, resulting in severe personal injury or death. STIHL recommends having your metal cutting attachment sharpened and balanced by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer to reduce the risk of severe or fatal injury. To sharpen the metal cutting attachment: ► Use a flat file to sharpen dull cutting attachments. In case of more serious wear or nicks, resharpen with a grinder or have it sharpened by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. ► Sharpen frequently and take away as little metal as necessary to create a sharp edge. Two or three strokes of the file are usually enough. ► Resharpen the cutting edges uniformly. Take care not to alter the contour of the blade body. ► See cutting attachment packaging for additional sharpening instructions. Keep the packaging for future reference. To balance the metal cutting attachment: ► After resharpening about 5 times, check the cutting tool for out-of-balance on a STIHL balancer (special accessory) or have it checked and rebalanced by an authorized STIHL servicing dealer as necessary. 0458-838-8601-A 43

20.3
Sharpening and Balancing a Metal Cutting
Attachment
WARNING
Never use a dull or damaged metal cutting attachment.
Working with a dull blade leads to increased physical strain,
increased vibration load, unsatisfactory cutting results and
increased wear, which can result in loss of control and injury
to the operator or bystanders. A damaged cutting
attachment may vibrate, crack, break or come off the
trimmer / brushcutter, which may result in serious or fatal
injury or property damage. Make sure the cutting attachment
is sharp and in good condition before starting work.
WARNING
An improperly sharpened metal cutting attachment can
increase the risk of kickout (blade thrust) and other reactive
forces, resulting in severe personal injury or death. STIHL
recommends having your metal cutting attachment
sharpened and balanced by an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer to reduce the risk of severe or fatal injury.
To sharpen the metal cutting attachment:
Use a flat file to sharpen dull cutting attachments. In case
of more serious wear or nicks, resharpen with a grinder or
have it sharpened by an authorized STIHL servicing
dealer.
Sharpen frequently and take away as little metal as
necessary to create a sharp edge. Two or three strokes of
the file are usually enough.
Resharpen the cutting edges uniformly. Take care not to
alter the contour of the blade body.
See cutting attachment packaging for additional
sharpening instructions. Keep the packaging for future
reference.
To balance the metal cutting attachment:
After resharpening about 5 times, check the cutting tool for
out-of-balance on a STIHL balancer (special accessory)
or have it checked and rebalanced by an authorized
STIHL servicing dealer as necessary.
